History of Fair Grove High School

History of Fair Grove High School

According to Greene County History books, the first school in Fair Grove was a log school built sometime around 1850. It was located at the top of Fair Grove hill. It was called the Duke School House after the teacher at the time, Chatham Duke.

Sometime around 1866, a one room frame house became the schoolhouse. It was also located on the top of the hill, by the old cemetery. This was used for around 25 years.

In 1891, a two story, four room schoolhouse was constructed on the grounds where the current elementary building stands. This building had a bell tower with a bell that would toll to announce the call of school in session.  After 37 years, the building burned due to a flu fire. The Superintendent was I.W.Wingo and although school was in session, no one was hurt. So, for a time school was resumed in city buildings and area churches.

In 1928, a new sandstone block elementary building and high school building was built. The high school had a cafeteria, fifteen classrooms, a gymnasium, and even drinking fountains. It also had a tower at the top that housed the bell from the building that had burnt. The elementary building had a lower level used mainly for storage and six classrooms on the upper level.

From 1935-1937 stones were quarried from Mr. Potter’s land to build an Agriculture building and to build a retaining wall that ran along the road in front of the high school. This wall was built by the WPA. (Works Progress Administration)  The school buses dropped off students in between these school buildings and the stone Agriculture building. The high school was used for 26 years. In 1954, the high school caught fire during a roof repair and the building burnt. School was not in session, but the smoke could be seen for miles, as the roof was tar. Many people rallied to salvage as much of the contents as possible. Once again, some classes were moved to area church buildings. The stone agriculture building was also used for classes. The stone elementary building remained in service for years to come.

Permission was requested to build a bell tower on the school grounds to provide a display for the bell that had now survived two school fires. The principal agreed with the contingent that a restroom be added to the lower level of the existing stone elementary building. The bell tower was constructed on the playground and a plaque was set in the side honoring the class of 1928 by listing the class officers.

By 1956, Fair Grove had a new high school building and a new elementary building with the older stone building as an addition.  In 1966 a new cafeteria and a library was constructed by contractors, Latimer and McNabb. It was built between the High School and Elementary to serve both buildings.

Eventually, these two buildings became one continuous building enclosing the cafeteria and library. As the attendance kept growing, the need arose for a new High School. That building was constructed by Jack D. Ball in 1980. Then in 1996, Jack Ball & Associates and Sides Construction Co, Inc. completed the addition of a Library, Band room and weight rooms on the north end of the High School building. They also built a new library/media center and additional classrooms in the Elementary building.

In 2007, fifth grade classes were held in trailers due to student body growth.

The current Middle School building along with an expanded library was completed in 2008. This addition was built by SAPP Design Associates, P.C. They also renovated the Elementary building and provided a new addition. This allowed the Elementary students to expand to a lower Elementary building and an Upper building. It also allowed space for Fair Grove Schools to begin a very successful Preschool Program.

In 2009, a derecho storm with winds over 100 mph hit the school buildings and destroyed parts of the High School building and damaged the roof on the Elementary school. Parts of the High School had to be rebuilt and the damage to the Elementary repaired.

In 2013, Fair Grove Schools added a FEMA shelter/Middle School Gym. This was built by Larry Snyder & Company Construction. The school facilities continue to be improved year to year from the playground, to classrooms, and transportation. The old Stone Elementary addition has been removed and a new lane has been added to aid in the safe delivery of Elementary students.

Currently, Fair Grove Schools has 1,197 students enrolled in the Elementary, Middle and HIgh School. The school has an outdoor track, two outdoor classrooms, two practice fields, a girls softball field, boys baseball field, a soccer field, and a football field. The Fair Grove Eagles continue strong in their vision of developing a culture of hope, perseverance, and passion for learning.
